Investigator (2 positions) – Temporary Full‑time Role

About the role
The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) is recruiting two investigators on a temporary full‑time basis. The position is based in Geneva, Switzerland, but may be relocated to Damascus or another site relevant to the Institution’s operations. The incumbent will report to the Human Rights Officer (Investigation Coordinator) or a designee.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, organise and manage investigations of serious breaches of international law related to missing persons.
- Conduct interviews with victims, witnesses and other sources; obtain and analyse statements.
- Ensure protection of victims and witnesses in line with the “do no harm” principle.
- Collect, record and preserve all relevant information, including electronic data, and maintain information chains.
- Participate in briefing and planning conferences with investigation staff.
- Direct and conduct incident‑response activities, including evidence preservation and hand‑over to authorities.
- Implement and maintain investigation procedures to ensure professional competency.
- Develop or contribute to processes that meet investigation needs.
- Safeguard investigation documentation according to institutional procedures.
- Prepare concise investigation reports and carry out post‑investigation tasks.
- Collaborate with colleagues to achieve organisational goals while complying with standard operating procedures and regulations.
- Collect and analyse data to identify trends, presenting findings through visualisations such as graphs, charts and tables.
Required profile
- Willingness to accept possible relocation in accordance with UN regulations.
- Ability to conduct interviews, gather evidence and protect sources.
- Strong analytical skills and experience preparing detailed investigation reports.
- Familiarity with international legal standards related to missing persons.
- Commitment to teamwork and adherence to organisational rules and procedures.
