Mechanical Design Engineer – LHCb Detector

About the role
You will join the LHCb Technical Coordination section of the LHCb group, working in the design office on CAD modelling of the LHCb detector. You will help develop digital mock‑up and digital twin methodologies to support installation planning, maintenance and operation for upcoming milestones.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the conceptual design and development of mechanical systems for the LHCb detector.
- Collaborate with physicists, engineers and technicians to turn requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Produce engineering documentation, technical specifications, 3D models and manufacturing drawings.
- Support the manufacturing, assembly, testing and installation of equipment.
- Assist in the creation and use of digital mock‑ups and digital twins for planning and operations.
Required profile
- Initial experience designing mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD software.
- Knowledge of CATIA V5 and familiarity with PDM/PLM environments.
- Exposure to machining, assembly and testing of mechanical systems (advantage).
- Familiarity with 3D scanning, reverse engineering or digital‑twin concepts (advantage).
Required skills
- Ability to work effectively in an international, multidisciplinary team.
- 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting skills, preferably with CATIA V5.
- Good knowledge of mechanical drawing standards (ISO GPS), materials and manufacturing processes.
- Basic programming skills in JavaScript and/or Python (optional).
- Interest or experience with 3D web visualisation technologies such as Three.js, WebGL and glTF.

- A monthly net stipend of 5 266 CHF (Bachelor) or 5 793 CHF (Master).
- 30 days of paid leave per year plus a two‑week annual closure.
