Technical Studentship in Material & Surface Science

About the role

You will join CERN’s material and surface science group as a Technical Student, gaining hands‑on experience while supporting research projects. The position combines learning with real‑world technical tasks in a multicultural, international environment.

Key responsibilities

• Learn from and assist experienced engineers, technicians and scientists in your field of study.
• Contribute to ongoing projects involving analysis, testing or characterisation of materials and coatings.
• Take part in day‑to‑day technical activities under close supervision.
• Collaborate and exchange ideas within an international, multidisciplinary team.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics or a related discipline.
• University requires or encourages a practical training period.
• Eager to develop skills through on‑the‑job learning.
• Enjoys teamwork and learning from others in a collaborative setting.

Required skills

• Good understanding of material and surface science fundamentals relevant to your studies.
• Curiosity, precision and a proactive attitude towards learning.
• Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multicultural team.

What we offer

• Monthly allowance of 3 486 CHF (tax‑free).
• 30 days paid leave per year plus a two‑week annual closure.
