Power System Physicist/Engineer for the CMS HGCAL

About the role
As a Power System Physicist/Engineer for the CMS High‑Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) you will be responsible for the development, integration, testing and commissioning of the detector’s power systems. You will work in a multinational, multidisciplinary team to ensure reliable low‑voltage and medium‑voltage supplies for the read‑out electronics and sensor biasing.
Key responsibilities
- Follow procurement of low‑voltage and bias power supplies, conduct acceptance and stress tests on delivered units.
- Support commissioning of power systems during mass‑assembly and testing phases.
- Evaluate HGCAL performance in relation to its power systems and develop mitigation strategies for noise, interference and ripple.
- Oversee installation, cable routing, connectorisation and in‑situ testing of power systems in the underground Service and Experimental caverns.
- Integrate power supplies with CMS safety, control and monitoring systems.
Required profile
- Master’s degree, PhD or equivalent experience in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Proven experience testing, operating and debugging power systems for complex devices such as particle detectors.
- Experience with silicon‑ or scintillator‑based detectors and large‑scale electronic procurement is an advantage.
- Ability to work effectively in multinational, multicultural teams.
Required skills
- Design, construction and installation of low‑voltage high‑current and medium‑voltage (up to 800 V) power supplies.
- Implementation of DC‑DC converters, voltage regulation and cabling for detector modules.
- Specification, testing and validation of power electronic components and detector hardware.
