Mechanical Design Engineer – Rail Systems (80-100%)

About the role

ABB is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Rail Systems Business Line in Untersiggenthal. You will be responsible for the mechanical design of converters, energy storage systems and cooling units used in railway, e‑bus and e‑truck applications. The role offers a hybrid work model and the chance to work on globally deployed products.

Key responsibilities

• Design complete converters and cooling units for traction and heavy‑vehicle applications.
• Create, maintain and manage product data in PLM systems (e.g., PTC Windchill).
• Plan and execute validation tests focusing on cooling performance and structural strength.
• Support production during new‑product introductions and drive continuous improvement.
• Develop technical specifications and clarify requirements with suppliers and customers.
• Assist the sales team during concept development and quotation phases.

Required profile

• Trained Mechanical Design Engineer with a technical school, bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
• Experience in mechanical design for power electronic equipment, preferably in rolling stock, automotive or other vehicle sectors.
• Proficient in English; German is a plus.
• Open, collaborative team player with a hands‑on attitude.
