Political Affairs Officer / Climate, Peace and Security Advisor

About the role

The Climate, Peace and Security Advisor (CPSA) will support UNAMA leadership in Geneva, providing strategic analysis on how climate change, environmental shocks and natural resource management affect peace and stability in Afghanistan and the wider region.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver up‑to‑date analysis on climate‑peace‑security interlinkages for UNAMA and relevant UN entities.
• Promote coherence and integration of climate‑related risks into UNAMA policies, strategies and programmes.
• Facilitate engagement with Afghan de‑facto authorities, civil society, regional actors and the international community on climate, peace and security issues.
• Support the Resident Coordinator’s Office in integrating climate considerations into aid coordination and the Climate, Water and Environment Task Force.
• Identify funding gaps and assist in developing proposals for climate‑related peacebuilding programmes.
• Collaborate with UN system partners and external stakeholders to mobilise climate finance for peace initiatives.
• Serve as UNAMA’s focal point for early warning, best‑practice sharing and coordination on climate, peace and security.

Required profile

• Proven experience in political affairs, peacebuilding, climate change or related fields.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to produce evidence‑based policy recommendations.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement abilities.
• Understanding of the Afghan context and regional dynamics.
