ETH get hired · Bâle
Job description
About the role
The Aquatic and Isotope Biogeochemistry Group at the University of Basel seeks a postdoctoral researcher for a two‑year project investigating algal production, organic matter export, and microbial nitrogen cycling in lakes, with a focus on nitrous oxide emissions and climate change impacts.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate seasonal lake sampling campaigns, including water‑column sampling, environmental profiling, and sediment trap deployment.
- Design and perform stable isotope tracer incubations to quantify nitrification, N₂O production, and related nitrogen transformations.
- Conduct laboratory analyses of nutrients, dissolved gases, and organic matter using established facilities.
- Integrate field and experimental data with satellite observations to link surface productivity, organic matter export, and N₂O production.
- Collaborate on data synthesis and biogeochemical modelling with partners at Eawag.
Required profile
- PhD in biogeochemistry, environmental sciences, limnology, aquatic microbial ecology, or a related field, completed by the start date.
- Experience in aquatic fieldwork and laboratory research, preferably involving nutrient cycling or greenhouse‑gas measurements.
- Ability to organise regular field campaigns, work independently, and collaborate effectively.
- Strong English communication and scientific writing skills; German is a plus.
Required skills
- Stable isotope tracer techniques.
- Satellite remote sensing and environmental data analysis.
- Lake sampling methods and water‑column profiling.
- Laboratory analysis of nutrients, dissolved gases, and organic matter.
What we offer
- Engaging postdoctoral position in an international, collaborative research environment.
- Access to lake sampling infrastructure, advanced analytical and stable isotope facilities, and computational resources.
- Opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary research profile spanning aquatic nitrogen cycling, greenhouse‑gas production, and remote sensing.
- Employment at 80‑100% FTE for two years, with salary and benefits according to University of Basel regulations.
