Rakhine State Specialist – Remote Consultant

About the role
The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar seeks a Rakhine State Specialist to support its evidence‑based investigations into alleged crimes in Rakhine State. Working remotely for an eight‑month contract, you will provide linguistic, geographic and contextual expertise to strengthen the Mechanism’s analytical outputs.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and update a glossary of specialized Rohingya, Burmese and Rakhine terms relevant to alleged crimes.
- Contribute to geographic mapping exercises and the mapping platform with detailed knowledge of Rakhine State.
- Advise on incident investigations, identify relevant sources, and analyse evidentiary materials (documents, video, audio) in local languages.
- Support witness interview planning by supplying contextual and geographic information and reviewing related evidence.
- Generate reports, memoranda and internal recommendations based on reviewed evidence.
- Coordinate with analysts, investigators, legal officers and supervisors to ensure consistency with internal guidelines.
Required profile
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Asian studies, conflict/security studies, international criminal law, information management or related field, or a first‑level degree plus two years relevant experience.
- Minimum five years of professional experience dealing with the political, human‑rights, humanitarian or security situation in Rakhine State.
- Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines and produce high‑quality analytical outputs.
Required skills
- Fluency in Rohingya, Burmese and Rakhine languages.
- Strong knowledge of Rakhine State geography and socio‑political context.
- Experience with evidence review and documentation in conflict‑related investigations.
