R&D Chemical Recycling Intern

About the role

Sulzer invites you to join its Polymer Application and Recycling R&D team in the Chemtech division in Switzerland as an R&D Chemical Recycling Intern. You will work alongside experienced scientists and engineers on laboratory and pilot-scale projects covering chemical recycling, renewable chemicals and sustainable fuels, gaining hands-on experience with analytical techniques, reactor systems and process development.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement analytical methods for characterizing oils, plastics, waxes, solvents and complex mixtures
• Run laboratory-scale investigations on chemical recycling, feedstock upgrading, purification and upcycling
• Operate laboratory reactors and support experimental campaigns across R&D projects
• Characterize samples using ASTM, UOP and ISO procedures
• Analyze, interpret and document results in technical reports, and present findings in project meetings
• Assist with pilot plant trials, troubleshooting and continuous pilot operations, including shifts when needed
• Contribute to innovation projects on polymer applications, biofuels, solvents and bio-based monomers and polymers
• Maintain laboratory safety and ESH compliance

Required profile

• Master's degree in Chemistry, preferably with a specialization in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science
• Hands-on laboratory experience in a chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, polymer or flavor & fragrance environment
• Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, organization and collaboration skills
• Proficient English; German is a plus

• Analytical chemistry and separation and purification sciences
• GC (MS, FID, TOFMS, TCD), ICP-MS, CIC, Simulated Distillation and titration methods (Karl Fischer, Total Acid Number, Bromine Number)
• Physical property measurements such as density and viscosity
• Laboratory safety and safe handling of chemicals
