Stress Engineer - Non-linear & Propellants
Destinus · Zürich
Job description
About the role
The Destinus engineering team is looking for a Stress Engineer to lead structural sizing and simulation of solid rocket motor components, focusing on non‑linear and thermomechanical analysis of propellant grains, liners, and thermal protection systems.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct stress analysis using hand calculations and FEA (linear, non‑linear, static, dynamic).
- Simulate solid rocket motor structures, including propellant grain stress, bond integrity at interfaces, TPS thermomechanical response, and igniter/nozzle loads.
- Perform non‑linear simulations covering geometric and material non‑linearity as well as contact mechanics.
- Execute thermomechanical analyses of metallic, composite, bonded, and polymeric structures under thermal cycling.
- Support experimental characterization of materials and integrate test data into material models.
- Correlate FE predictions with strain gauge, load, and thermal test data and update models.
- Prepare stress reports, margin‑of‑safety calculations, and design justification documentation.
Required profile
- Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of industry experience in stress analysis of aerospace or mechanical structures.
- Fluent in English; German or French is a plus.
Required skills
- Proficiency with FEA packages: NASTRAN (Femap or equivalent), Abaqus, Optistruct/HyperWorks.
- Strong classical stress analysis skills (beam theory, buckling, fastener/joint analysis, margin‑of‑safety calculations).
- Experience with non‑linear material modeling (plasticity, hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity) and thermomechanical analysis.
- Ability to correlate FE predictions with experimental test data.
