Internship on measurability and indicators for chemicals and waste

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a motivated intern to support the development of high‑level indicators on the environmental burden of chemicals and waste. Working from the Geneva office, the intern will assist the Programme Management Officer in data‑driven tasks that feed into the Global Chemicals and Waste Forum (GCF) and its first international conference.

Key responsibilities

• Support testing and prototype development for a new environmental burden indicator.
• Collect, curate, and consolidate relevant datasets on chemicals and waste.
• Assist with data analysis, visualization, and preparation of background materials for the GCF conference.
• Validate and prepare data for the first GCF International Conference (16‑20 November, Geneva).
• Contribute to drafting documentation and conference deliverables.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently completed a bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. programme in chemistry, environmental science, data science or a related field.
• Fluency in written and spoken English; knowledge of French or another UN language is an advantage.
• Strong organizational, research and attention‑to‑detail skills.
• Ability to communicate information clearly through written drafts and visual presentations.
