Language Specialist – Translation & Interpretation (Remote)

About the role
The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar seeks experienced Language Specialists to provide high‑quality interpretation, translation and transcription services for its external communications and evidentiary materials. This is a six‑month consultancy performed remotely, supporting the Mechanism’s mandate to investigate serious crimes.
Key responsibilities
- Interpret spoken Burmese and other Myanmar languages to English (and vice‑versa) for witnesses, information providers and Mechanism staff.
- Translate a wide range of documents, including legal and investigative materials, ensuring consistency with the LSSS glossary and style guide.
- Transcribe audio/video recordings and translate them into English.
- Store translated and transcribed materials securely in the evidence repository.
- Train and correct outputs from the Mechanism’s AI translation tool.
- Participate in consultations on terminology and language consistency.
- Assist in preparing English summaries of evidentiary material originally in Myanmar languages.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle potentially distressing content with professionalism.
Required profile
- University degree (or equivalent) in languages, social sciences, law or a related field.
- Minimum three years of professional Burmese‑English translation and/or interpretation experience.
- Experience with legal or criminal investigative documents is desirable.
- Background in international criminal courts or accountability mechanisms is a plus.
